A New Pen Name/Author Identity!

Hello everyone! After serious consideration, I’ve decided to change up my pen name to J. Alan Veerkamp, so new readers might take my efforts more seriously. I love my original Mann Ramblings identity, but the tongue in cheek nature might be seen as an author whose work in more silly in nature or devoid of good content.

So, I’ve made some changes.

You can find my new blog where all my new content will be living soon at:

https://jalanveerkamp.wordpress.com

My three sci-fi novels, The Luxorian Fugitive, A Cook’s Tale, and Priest & Pariahs have found new homes with NineStar Press with a refreshed second edition of all three. Keep on the lookout for more news as it comes. I’m so excited to see where we can go from here.

Hope you’ll be coming with me!

BLOG TOUR! Guitars & Choices by Layla Dorine – #excerpt #guest post #mmromance #contemporary

I’m happy to be part of Layla Dorine’s blog tour of her new release Guitars and Choices. I’ve worked with her before as we both wrote stories on Gay Authors.org and am thrilled at her resolve to get her work out there. Take a look below and see information about this series as well as an exclusive guest post and excerpts.

Enjoy!

Greetings and thank you so much for having me on your blog today to talk about Guitars and Choices and the re-release of Guitars and Cages. Asher’s story is probably the closest to me of all the stories I’ve written because these characters have been with me the longest. Asher, Cole, Alexia and Morgan were all part of the roleplay world I used to spend so much time writing in, and the things that happen to them in both Guitars and Cages and Guitars and Choices are a direct response to something that already took place in the game world. Chase’s death, for example was vividly played out, along with the aftermath and fallout the split up the family. The flashback of their experiences, each of these is a taste of something that was once fully written in days and days of continuous scenes, so the emotion that comes through the characters in response to them has always been deeper to me, because these moments that are eluded to, like the one in the barn that nearly sends Asher into a meltdown, has been fully written once, and so the character, like the writer, has that moment to draw from and look back upon.

It also, at times, makes it harder to write some of the moments in their lives and there are times when I find myself crying along with the characters or laughing at the memories. Asher has always been the center focus of my little world, but, moving forward into book three, I feel that it’s time for Alexia to step to the forefront and get to spread her wings a bit, so, while Conner and Asher will be very much present and continuing to deepen their connection to one another and the relationship they have been forming, Alexia will be the focus of Guitars and Canvases. There will also be more of Cole, as he’s tenaciously hovering around the fringes of the family trying to figure his own shit out. Of course that means there will be a book four in the future as well. Thank you so much for coming on this wild ride with them, and thank you Mann for having me on your blog today.

Guitars and Choices Blurb

Asher Logan has been a lot of things: runaway, guitarist, cage fighter, cowboy, but the one thing he’s always avoided was being a father to his young son. Now faced with returning to his families ranch, he’s forced to deal with the knowledge that the move would put him right down the road from Shawn. Still, it’s better than staying in the city, with drunken, bitter older brother Cole, whose anger and prejudices have made him difficult to be around.

Add in the fact that Asher’s new boyfriend, Conner, is eager to make the move with him, and there’s little argument that he can make against it. But returning home means facing demons, and the barn he’s avoided since the day his father caught him and his first love together in the hay. Speaking of his father, when the old man finds out Asher is back, he knows it will only be a matter of time before he demands Asher come to the prison to see him.

Moving means facing a buried past and truths long hidden, but staying in the city isn’t good for anyone, least of all Asher’s young nephew, Rory. It’s a hard road to face, filled with tough choices, and an old secret that just might provide more questions than answers.

Guitars and Cages Blurb

Asher Logan is a bartender and a pretty wicked guitar player, when he isn’t wrecking his hands fighting in a cage. With a past he keeps hoping to outrun, Asher’s been on a downward spiral for longer than he can remember. When his sister-in-law leaves Rory, his eight-year-old nephew, in his care, Asher is forced into two things he’s never been good at: sobriety and responsibility. As he struggles to care for Rory, his own life begins to unravel.

When Asher’s brother, Alex, turns up, presenting as a girl and announcing her new name is Alexia, it further complicates matters, as does the arrival of his new neighbor, Conner. Both, in their own way, compel Asher to look at his own closely-guarded views on sexuality.

When the siblings’ older brother, Cole, reacts violently to Alexia, Asher is placed squarely in the middle of a family conflict which compels him to confront who he pretends to be versus who he really is.

Asher must choose who to trust and who to finally walk away from.

Guitars and Choices

Excerpt #1

“You worry too much,” Asher whispered to Conner, whose plate was piled high with a little bit of everything.

Conner chuckled. “When it comes to you, I don’t think that’s possible.”

“Ha, ha, ha,” Asher grumbled as he popped the tab on his soda and took a long drink. The cold felt good on his parched throat.

Rory was dismantling his cheeseburger, so Asher reached over and put it back together.

“Come on, I like it that way,” Rory protested.

“And that’s fine at home, where we can chuck you in the shower after you’ve covered yourself in ketchup and pickle juice. Unless you wanna take a bath in the duck pond, you’ll keep it all together.”

“Fine.” Rory pouted until Alexia reached over and tousled his hair; then he was all flailing hands and squeals of protest as he tried to brush it back down.

Asher grinned. “Now you look like a porcupine.”

Scowling at his uncle, Rory gave up trying to fix his hair. His eyes lit up as they landed on the can of whipped cream sitting in a bowl of ice on the table. Before anyone could stop him, he’d snatched it up and sprayed Asher, leaving his face a sticky mess. Silence descended over the table for half a second, before everyone cracked up.

“Now you look like a, um….” Rory turned to Alexia. “What was that monkey we saw at the zoo?”

“Saki monkey,” Alexia told him, nearly falling out of her chair. “And you do, Asher, oh my God, I wish I had my sketchbook.”

A couple of subtle clicks told him that sketchbook or no, this moment would not be soon forgotten. Asher blinked and reached up to wipe his face, only to have Conner catch his hand and stop him.

Conner ran a finger through the sticky cream on Asher’s cheek, then sucked it from his finger. “You make a good dessert.”

Asher’s eyes widened and he felt his neck flush. Suddenly it was far too warm for a fall day and his jeans were feeling too tight.

Conner smiled and dipped a paper towel in a Dixie cup of water to wipe off the remaining mess.

“Now you’re helpful,” Asher muttered, but held still and let Conner finish cleaning him up. Not like he really wanted to move; he was waiting for his jeans to feel less restricting, shocked that such a simple act had affected him so much. Of course, it was hard for him to look at Conner at all without feeling some level of desire.

Conner dabbed Asher’s face one last time with the paper towel, then backed away and returned his camera to its bag. Asher sat there lost in thought for several moments before he turned his attention back to his plate. He thought he’d seen desire in Conner’s eyes, but he wasn’t sure. They hadn’t spoken about taking their friendship to another level since the night Conner had rescued him from Catfish. The only thing that had really changed was that they were spending more time together than they ever had before. Most nights Conner came to the bar after work, ate his dinner in the kitchen, and then helped Alexia fix platters of fried cheese curds and chicken wings. Sometimes he helped Asher or Morgan behind the bar, the two experienced men teaching him how to bartend. Asher had drawn the line at Conner helping to bounce; he didn’t want any drunk guys taking a swing at him.

Excerpt:

“Settle down, little one. No one is going to hurt you here.”

His gaze darted to the hallway Chris had disappeared down, and he let out a low rumble.

I smiled and answered his silent question. “Not even him. He will come around.” After he’d got over having a werewolf in the house and came to terms with the idea that werewolves were real, that was.

“Trust me. Now settle down.” Though keeping my tone calm, I put as much force as I could muster behind the words.

I wasn’t a shifter, and the animal had no reason to obey me. But power was power, no matter where it came from, and I was praying it would be enough. Otherwise, I was screwed.

The wolf growled, shifting his center of gravity lower down his back as he prepared to jump.

I was familiar enough with werewolves to know they reacted to strength and dominance, so I tried again, putting more of that behind my words. “Enough!”

The growl subsided without dying completely, and the eyes holding mine became more alert, the anxiety in them half-replaced by curiosity.

“That’s it. Settle down.”

The wolf whimpered and crouched until his belly rested on the floor. He regarded me carefully, his upper lip still curled in a threat. He didn’t trust me. Not yet. The feeling was mutual.

I wasn’t his alpha, nor did I want to be, but I needed him calm and obedient. My heart, which beat loudly when I first faced the animal, had lowered to a more normal rhythm. Sweat soaked through my T-shirt, and I was willing to bet money the wolf could smell the fear on me. I held his gaze, bringing up even more power.

Calm down, damn it!

The wait stretched on; a nerve wrecking staring contest. I didn’t move, barely breathing. Slowly, the wolf’s body went slack, the lip uncurling. The pupils shrank back to normal size, for a wolf anyway, but some of the angst remained.

“That’s it. Good boy.”

One of his ears flicked, head tilting to the side.

“I need to check how bad you’re hurt.”

The wolf tried to crawl farther back, clearly not happy with my suggestion.

“No, I mean it. You’re hurt. I need to see what is going on.”

The growl was back in his throat.

“Enough!” I used power to put strength behind the command. “Shift!”

His eyes widened, but the force behind the words could not be ignored. He tried to fight me, I could see it on his face, but I kept my gaze and the stream of power steady, waiting for him to submit.

Eventually, the tension left his body and he stretched out on the floor. The pupils changed slightly, their color softening to a warm brown. The fur rippled as the muscles beneath rearranged themselves. The shoulders widened, the neck thickened, and the muzzle retracted.

Bio picture

About the author:

Born in Romania, land of the Iele and Vlad the Impaler, AIMEE BRISSAY has spent all her life surrounded by stories. She has ridden side by side with d’Artagnan and The Three Musketeers to retrieve the Queen’s diamonds, set sail on the Erasmus in search of the Japans, fell in love with Rhett Butler and roamed the Wild West alongside Old Shatterhand. She has walked in the footsteps of the Olympian Gods and searched for Zalmoxis’ sanctuary in the Carpathians. In her mind, she’s never been the damsel in distress but rather the knight in shiny armor fighting for a cause. Aimee Brissay loves each and every one of these characters with a passion, and has always had a soft spot for the men-on-men fellows.

With a background like this, turning to writing was no surprise. Aimee discovered Men-on-Men erotica early in life and has never looked back. After that first story, she devoured all the books she could find. And when she ran out, she decided to write her own. Aimee Brissay has over 10 stories published, varying from contemporary to fantasy and BDSM, men-on-men, men-on-men-on-men or on-women, and anything in between.

She can write anywhere, even in a crowded room or a busy subway station, but she loves solitude. When she’s not at her evil day job or she’s not torturing her characters in her latest WIP, she can be found writing or playing with her cats. Or her newly adopted dog, because 5 cats are just not enough.

She welcomes messages from readers and promises to answer all of them as soon as possible, though that can mean anything from one hour to a month.

Update: Book reports and WIPs

Hello everyone!

If you’ve noticed things have changed a little bit on my blog and ebook selling sites. Due to an unfortunate set of circumstances on the part of my publisher, Wayward Ink, forcing them to close their doors. This has effectively canceled all my contracts, and all rights for my series of ebooks have reverted to me. I am saddened by this because I had hoped to form a solid relationship with Wayward Ink that would be mutually beneficial for us both. However, ’twas not to be.

While in some ways it’s nice to have total control over my work again, the awkward part is that I’m unprepared to have no stories to sell. I’m not about to rush something out and force a story out into the world that isn’t ready. That benefits no one. Yes, I could self-publish my books again, but my current workload (on and off writing) is a little stressful right now to split my attention that much further on marketing a second edition. And to be honest, I’m really bad at that kind of stuff. (What? A creative person who lacks marketing skills? What madness!)

With a little research, I discovered some options to re-submit these books to another publisher. I revised all three books and sent them in a few weeks ago. So right now I am in wait to see where we go from here. Who knows? If they don’t take the series, I may self-pub them after all. The Ship Logs of the Santa Claus will rise again one way or another.

864

In the meantime my free stories can be found on Gay Authors. There’s a link in the header as well.

I am working on a short story, hopefully to be included in an upcoming anthology and revising my novel Innocence & Carnality for future publication. Once I can get those under control, I have a choice of a few WIPs to choose from for my next venture.

Wish me luck!

Blog Tour – Serpent’s Kiss by Layla Dorine #excerpt #paranormal #mmromance

My fellow author, Layla Dorine has a new release and I’m thrilled to be part of her blog tour. Layla has been kind enough to share some of her thoughts as well as an excerpt from her new book, Serpent’s Kiss. Read and enjoy!

From Layla:

It’s a pleasure to be able to take part in your blog, thank you so much for helping to share Serpent’s Kiss with readers, it was such fun to write this story, the characters and their world just came to life, fast and furious, almost too fast for me to keep up. I’ve learned to write fast, type fast and scribble every sort of note I can just to keep up, but it’s all worth it when I get to moments like this one. It’s funny though, that this story came without any planning, no outlining, no character sheets or any of the things I tend to do when I have an idea but aren’t really certain of who the characters are. In this case, it was the world that was uncertain, and the characters who were loud, bright, and fully developed in my mind from the moment they started speaking right up through the end.

For the most part, I’d always considered myself a pantser, but at the conclusion of Serpent’s Kiss towards the end of last year, I found myself in an unusual position for me. I actually did not have another WIP to shift my attention to. I had partially competed manuscripts that I was unsure of what they wanted to become, but I had nothing I could dive right into, and that was a bit disconcerting for someone who is used to writing every day.

For the first time since college create writing classes, I found myself turning towards planning, aided by a very well timed erotic writing workshop I decided to take part in. I found myself digging out character sheets, planning aids from other workshops, world building aids, and every other manner of plotting material I could find, in order to get me started on the next story and wow, what a difference. I used to find them stifling, but when I really needed them the most, those old notes and that old way of doing things really stopped me from falling into a writing slump. I have 5 WIPs in various stages at the moment, and each first draft is coming along nicely, all thanks to those little planning tips that allowed me to take these small, two and three line ideas that popped into my head and grow them into a story. I can’t wait to be able to share those stories with everyone.

Blog Tour-Serpent’s Kiss by Layla Dorine

Back view of a mysterious man walking in a padestrian tunnel

Blurb

While searching for their missing sibling, Zaiden and his sister, Kaandhal come across the last pure blooded psy-clairvoyant of their kind. Unfortunately for them, Darian has no idea what he truly is and isn’t much interested in learning, or in helping them locate their brother, Zxex.

A bounty hunter by trade, who’s been all but banished from his family due to his visions, Darian’s a bit cynical about his ability to be of any assistance to them. Never-the-less, Zaiden brings him back to their home Rhumba, where Darian discovers that very little is what it seems.

With plots unfolding all around them and discoveries about his own heritage leaving Darian reeling, he is left with the choice of whether to embrace who and what he is, or spend every moment with them a prisoner on the fringes of their society.

Add in a pesky little bond that only seems to grow the more time he and Zaiden spend together, and several factions looking to gain possession of him and Darian is left wondering if his visions just might be the least of his troubles.

Back view of a mysterious man walking in a padestrian tunnel

Excerpt

Gesturing with his hand for the minister to lead the way, Karim directed them away from the drafty auction space and back toward the warmth of living quarters through a series of twisting tunnels. They bypassed a cavern filled floor to ceiling with weapons and for a moment, Darian forgot to move. Mouth hanging open, he studied the blades and other close quarter weaponry, surprised to not see bows or guns.

Karim grinned, and stepped closer to Darian, though he did not attempt to touch him this time, for which Darian was grateful. The bodyguard was confusing. He might even be easy to like if he didn’t work for Tihara’s crazy ass.

“Impressive, aren’t they?”

“Hell yeah,” Darian remarked without thought, quickly realizing his mistake. “Sorry, but if ever a moment called for cursing, this was it. Holy…seriously, this one amazing armory.”

“This is but a small collection, the true armory if kept far from here. Perhaps, if you cease to annoy my mistress she will allow us to spar with a few of them, if you believe you are capable.”

“I’ve done my share of playing with knives.”

“Good, then I look forward to testing just how much play you are capable of.”

Darian flicked out his tongue, licking along his upper lip, deliberately teasing the same way it seemed as if Karim was teasing him. For a moment, the minister was forgotten as he locked eyes with Karim and saw the interest flicker in the other man’s eyes.

“I love a good challenge,” Darian remarked. “Let’s just hope you’re as good as you seem to think you are.”

“I am afraid your little sparring session will have to wait,” Minister Valero interrupted. “There is much I need you to look into tonight.”

“Yes, sir,” Darian replied, not wishing to displease the man and risk confrontation, especially when the vibes rolling off the minister weren’t ones of violence, or cruelty. Unfortunately, the minister did not seem to be the type to be easily manipulated, and from his physical stature, he looked like he’d put up quite the fight. Not good for his chances of escape. There’d likely be plenty of time for sparring Karim in the future.

Karim led them the rest of the way to a lavish suite of rooms without further interruption and handed the minister the key.

“There is chocolate syrup in the refrigerator along with milk, drinking a combination of it seems to help him recover after a vision,” Karim explained. “There is food in the refrigerator and supplies in the pantry should you wish anything additional. I am to retrieve him tomorrow morning at ten, until then, he is yours.”

The minister gave Karim a dismissive wave, his attention entirely on Darian. He’d hardly looked at the room, and it made Darian wonder just how much time they would spend in the common areas. He hopped the man would allow him to eat and drink, at least, or it would make for a very long evening.

Hard times, troubled times, the lives of her characters are never easy, but then what life is? The story is in the struggle, the journey, the triumphs and the falls. She writes about artists, musicians, loners, drifters, dreamers, hippies, bikers, truckers, hunters and all the other folks that she’s met and fallen in love with over the years. Sometimes she writes urban romance and sometimes its aliens crash landing near a roadside bar. When she isn’t writing, or wandering somewhere outdoors, she can often be found curled up with a good book and a kitty on her lap.
